Linux is a free and open source operating system, which means that it is available for anyone to use, modify, and distribute. It is based on the Linux kernel, which was first developed by Linus Torvalds in 1991.

Linux is widely used for a variety of purposes, including running servers, building mobile applications, and as a desktop operating system. It is known for its stability, security, and flexibility, and it is used by individuals, businesses, and organizations around the world.

One of the key features of Linux is that it is open source. This means that the source code for the operating system is freely available, and users are able to view, modify, and distribute the code as they see fit. This has led to the development of a wide range of Linux distributions, which are customized versions of the operating system that are tailored to meet the needs of different users and environments.

Examples of popular Linux distributions include Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora and CentOS. Each of these distributions includes a set of tools and software packages that are appropriate for a specific purpose or user group, such as developers, administrators, or general users.

I have written many books on Linux. You will find the books in English and Norwegian. My most popular Linux book in English is “The Linux book”. You will find this book in Norwegian, “Boken om Linux”.  You will find more information on my publication page.
