Discover Alanya

4. A Town Full of History and Natural Beauty

Alanya has a fascinating history stretching back thousands of years.

Over the centuries, the area has been influenced by several civilisations, including the Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks and Ottomans.

Today, the town combines historic architecture and traditional Turkish culture with modern holiday facilities.

Its dramatic coastal setting, beautiful beaches, harbour, caves and surrounding mountains make Alanya one of the most attractive destinations on the Turkish Riviera.

5. Alanya Castle

Alanya Castle is one of the town’s most impressive landmarks.

Standing high above the Mediterranean Sea on a rocky peninsula, the castle provides magnificent panoramic views of Alanya, the harbour, Cleopatra Beach and the surrounding mountains.

Much of the surviving fortification dates from the thirteenth-century Seljuk period, although the site has a considerably longer history.

The castle walls extend for several kilometres around the historic peninsula.

Within the castle area, visitors can explore traditional houses, narrow streets, historic buildings and viewpoints.

A visit to the castle is highly recommended, particularly for anyone interested in history, architecture or photography.

The Alanya cable car also provides an attractive way to reach the upper part of the historic peninsula, subject to its current operating arrangements.

6. The Red Tower – Kızıl Kule

The Red Tower is one of Alanya’s most recognisable historic buildings.

Constructed in the thirteenth century during the Seljuk period, the tower was designed to protect the harbour and nearby shipyard.

Its distinctive octagonal structure and reddish stonework have made it an important symbol of Alanya.

The surrounding harbour area is particularly attractive in the evening, when the lights of the town reflect on the Mediterranean Sea.

Nearby, you can also visit the historic Seljuk shipyard, known as Tersane.

7. Damlataş Cave

Damlataş Cave is located close to Cleopatra Beach.

The cave was discovered in 1948 and is famous for its impressive stalactites and stalagmites.

It has a distinctive atmosphere, with relatively stable temperature and humidity throughout the year.

Although the cave is not particularly large, its unusual limestone formations make it an interesting place to visit.

It is easy to combine a visit to Damlataş Cave with a relaxing afternoon at Cleopatra Beach.

8. Dim Cave and Dim River

A trip to Dim Cave and the Dim River is highly recommended.

Dim Cave is situated in the mountains northeast of Alanya and contains impressive limestone formations.

The surrounding mountain scenery provides beautiful views of the region.

The nearby Dim River, known locally as Dim Çayı, is particularly popular during the hot summer months.

Along the river, you will find restaurants and recreational areas where visitors can enjoy a meal beside the flowing water.

Some restaurants have seating areas built directly over the river.

The cooler mountain air and refreshing water make this a pleasant escape from the summer heat.

Boat trips frequently include swimming stops, and some operators provide lunch on board.

These excursions offer an enjoyable way to experience Alanya from the sea.

11. Diving and Water Sports

The Mediterranean waters around Alanya offer opportunities for recreational diving.

Although the underwater environment is different from the coral reefs of the Red Sea, divers can still enjoy interesting rock formations, marine life and underwater scenery.

For visitors who prefer to remain above the water, there are plenty of other activities available along the beaches.

It is famous for its spectacular white terraces formed by mineral-rich thermal waters.

Above the terraces lies the ancient city of Hierapolis, where visitors can explore extensive archaeological remains.

Pamukkale is several hundred kilometres from Alanya, making it more suitable for an extended excursion or an overnight stay than a short day trip.

A visit to Cappadocia is highly recommended for anyone wishing to explore more of Türkiye.
